Application of online temperature monitoring system in factory transformers

I. Industry Pain Points

In recent years, Thailand has attracted a large number of manufacturing factories by leveraging the policy benefits of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) and its continuously improving infrastructure. Industries such as electronics, automobiles, and PCBs have expanded rapidly, leading to a continuous increase in the number of factories and a corresponding surge in electricity demand. As the core equipment of a factory's power distribution system, the stable operation of transformers directly affects the continuity of production lines and the economic benefits of enterprises.

Many Thai factories still rely on manual inspections to monitor transformer temperature, but the limitations of this method—incomplete coverage, low efficiency, and discontinuous data—are becoming increasingly apparent.

II. Why Monitor Transformer Temperature?

Transformer temperature reflects the operating status of the transformer. Abnormal transformer temperatures mainly stem from two "pain points": first, external input and output connections may experience increased resistance and severe overheating due to loose nuts, oxidation, or poor contact; second, internal windings may experience abnormally high temperatures due to iron losses, copper losses, inter-turn short circuits, or poor heat dissipation. A problem in either of these areas can paralyze the entire production line.

III. Acrel Online Temperature Monitoring Solution

1. Transformer Joint Temperature Monitoring

Factors such as loose transformer nuts or undersized washers can cause excessive contact resistance at the connection points, leading to overheating at the transformer's inlet and outlet, potentially causing serious accidents.

A wireless temperature monitoring solution is recommended. It is recommended to install  ATE400s wireless temp sensors(https://www.acrel.co.th/shop/ate400-tied-type-passive-wireless-temperature-sensor-1) at the transformer's inlet and outlet, transmitting the collected temperature data wirelessly to the ARTM-Pn(https://www.acrel.co.th/shop/artm-pn-local-temperature-data-display-device) display.

2. Transformer Internal Temperature Monitoring
Factors such as transformer iron loss, copper loss, inter-turn short circuits, and poor air circulation in the installation site can cause abnormally high transformer temperatures, shortening the transformer's lifespan and, in severe cases, even burning it out.

A wired temperature monitoring solution is recommended. It is recommended to pre-embed a PT100 inside the transformer and connect it to the ARTM-8 display device(https://www.acrel.co.th/shop/artm-pn-local-temperature-data-display-device-2) for temperature acquisition and display.

IV. Acrel Solution Advantages:

1. Comprehensive Internal and External Monitoring: Wireless temperature measurement (ATE400 + ARTM-Pn) is used for external joints, while pre-embedded PT100 + ARTM-8 is used for internal windings, covering all critical heat points of the transformer.

2. Real-time Online Monitoring with Timely Alarms: 24/7 uninterrupted monitoring supports high-temperature and ultra-high-temperature alarms, upgrading fault response from "post-event remediation" to "pre-event warning."

3. High-Voltage Safety with No Manual Contact Required: The ATE400 is passively powered and transmits wirelessly, avoiding high-voltage danger zones and eliminating the safety hazards of manual inspections.

4. Data Traceability and Remote Management: All temperature data supports RS485 upload to the monitoring system, forming historical curves for trend analysis and fault tracing.

5. Flexible Installation and Strong Adaptability: The wireless solution eliminates wiring, while the wired solution offers high accuracy. Flexible combinations are possible depending on site conditions, suitable for retrofitting old and new transformers or new construction projects.
